Peoria completes weekend sweep of Metro after shootout victory.

The Peoria Mustangs completed a home opening weekend sweep of the Metro Jets, by outlasting them 3-2 in the first shootout of the season. A Metro slashing penalty put the Mustangs on the power play late in the 1st period and Landon Olson took advantage of the man advantage scoring for the Mustangs with the assist going to Kyle Hamilton. Peoria emerged from the locker room and only had to wait 3 minutes before Josh Kaebel got help from Sean McGaughy and Kyle Hamilton and put the Mustangs up 2-0 early in the 2nd period, but a stubborn Metro team simply would not go away. They next 12 minutes of the 2nd period would see Metro adding 2 scores, the 2nd of which came with only 8 seconds remaining in the period, and on the power play.

The Mustangs killed 2 Metro power plays, and the contest would go to a sudden death 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime after a scoreless 3rd period left the game in a tie and gave Metro their first point of the season. Peoria missed a great opportunity just 1 minute into the overtime session when Metro's Jared Justice went to the box on a tripping penalty handing Peoria a man advantage and forcing Metro to skate with only three. The Mustangs however could not put the nail in the coffin and were forced to a shootout by Metro goalie Nickolas Ceccolini who stood on his head most of the afternoon and turned away 47 of Peorias 49 shots.

The shootout however was not so kind to Ceccolini. Coach Fleming sent out Josh Kaebel, Sean Mcgaughy and Patrick Colclough as the Mustangs first three shooters and they all delivered in succession beating Ceccolini like he stole something.

Mustangs goalie Ryan Siuzdak (shooz-dak) delivered a great performance while getting the win, turning away 18 of Metros 20 shots and gave way to shootout specialist Brad Makowski who allowed only one Metro shooter to score raising his shootout record to an amazing 19 - 1.   The Mustangs ran into a hot Metro goalie but were able to prevail with a 3 -2 shootout victory and raised their record to the .500 mark at 2 - 2 on the season. Peoria hits the road again next weekend as they travel to Flint Michigan for Saturday and Sunday contests with the Generals.

Mustangs get home opening win with 5-1 drubbing of Metro.

More than four hours after the scheduled game time, the Peoria Mustangs rewarded their loyal late night fans to a home opening win.

The Mustangs showed no sympathy for a Metro team that saw their bus break down near Chicago as they hung 5 goals and a loss on Metro goalie Colin Greeley, peppering him with 45 shots in what ended up being a 5-1 Mustang win.
Mustang forward Mike Fleming opened the scoring for Peoria just 1:06 into the contest with a snipe that went off of Greeleys glove and into the back of the net giving Peoria the early 1-0 lead. That lead however proved to be short lived as Metro's Michael Kolbasowski evened the score just 5 mins later.

In a game that saw the Mustangs dominate possession and live deep in the Metro zone most of the game, Metro's Greeley kept his team in the game with the score remaining tied 1-1 deep into the 2nd period. The Mustangs Patrick Shephard however would send Peoria into the locker room with a 2-1 lead after the 2nd intermission with what would prove to be the game winner and his first of two goals on the night.

Shepard picked up right where he left off at 6:23 into the 3rd period as he netted his second goal of the game giving the Mustangs a 3-1 lead, and much like their bus, caused the wheels on a valiant Metro team to begin to come off.

Georgia native Preston Wanamaker added the Mustangs fourth goal just a minute later, and William Colclough dented the back of the Metro net for the fifth time 9:10 into the final period. With Peoria now smelling blood in the water, the Mustangs turned up the intensity even higher with big physical hits from Zach Ummel late in the game and made sure the Jets did not get back up off the canvas, outshooting Metro 14-7 in the 3rd period and 45-25 for the game.

Jake Linhart, Austin Bond, Patrick Colclough, Landon Olson and Sean McGaughy also put points on the scoresheet with helpers and Wannamaker also added an assist to go along with his goal.  Peoria netted its first win for the 2008-2009 campaign improving to 1-2 on the season and hope to reach the .500 mark with another win over the same Metro team tomorrow at Owens Center.

Saturday 9-27-08
The Mustangs jumped about the .500 mark earning a hard fought win over the Flint Jr. Generals Saturday Night.

In a game that was tied 3-3 as late as 18:13 into the final period, and saw the Mustangs Jake Linhart give the Generals Karstens all he wanted in a tilt. Sean McGaughy scored on the power play with less than 2 minutes left in the game, with help from Josh Kaebel and Derek Bartsch, and put Peoria on top 4-3. Mustang goalie Brad Makowski capped off a stellar 44 save performance and notched the win for Peoria.

The Colclough brothers each had a night with both Patrick and WIlliam collecting a goal and an assist a piece, and Derek Bartsch also equalled that same feat. Zach Ummel, and Sean Casey, added helpers and the Mustangs let the Fling barn with a huge road win and improved to 4-3 on the young season.

Sunday 9-28-08
After dominating the contest, peppering Fling with an amazing 64 shots and leading the game with less than 2 minutes to play, the Mustangs suffered a nauseating, heartbreaking loss on Sunday, giving up 2 goals in the final 1:54 of the game and lost 6-5.

Peoria wasted amazing game from the Colclough brothers with each William and Patrick netting 4 point nites. William collected his first hat trick of the season and added an assist, and Patrick added 3 helpers and a goal of his own. Josh Kaebel scored the other Mustangs goal, and Derek Bartsch, Sean Mcgaughey, George Malliaras, and Zach Ummel provided assists, with Malliaras helping twice.

The Mustangs fell back to the .500 mark with the gut wrenching loss and will travel to Cleveland next weekend to face the undefeated Jr. Lumberjacks.

Saturday 10-4-08 and Sunday 10-5-08
MUSTANGS SWEEP AT CLEVELAND

A 9 hour bus ride didn't phase Peoria, who went into Clevelands barn and promptly swept the weekend series away from the previously unbeaten jr. lumberjacks.

Zack Ummel got the weekend sweep under way scoring with 5 minutes left in  the first period, getting help from Sean White and Preston Wanamaker. That lead remained almost until the end of the 2nd period when Clevelands Wisniewski tied the game at 1 with only 45 seconds remaining.

The Mustangs however came out of the locker room on fire scoring 3 times on 2 goals from Sean Mcgaughy and the other by Josh Kaebel. Both Mcgaughy and Kaebel also each had assists, with Kaebel collecting two. Also collecting 2 assists in his Peoria Mustang debut was Jeremy Meletti.

Also making his Mustang debut was net minder Michael Ogrady who saved 31 of 32 Lumberjacks shots and collected his first win in goal for Peoria.

On Sunday Peoria picked up right where they left off. The Mustangs got goals from Mike Fleming, Sean White, and Colclough brothers William and Patrick. Both brothers also assisted in their siblings goals. George Malliaras, Jeremy Meletti, Andrew Yocius, and Derek Bartsch also had helpers as the Mustangs completed a huge road sweep winning the Sunday matchup 4-3. Brad Makowski got the win in goal for the Mustangs who improved to 5-3 on the young season and will host Quad City on this Friday the 10th and Motor City on Sunday the 12th.
